Beth Whelan

My name is Beth. I am a graphic and movement artist  based in Portland, OR. Welcome to the digital space where I house my creative endeavors across those two worlds.

I'm a self-taught graphic designer interested in print, digital, and website design. To me, graphic design is the place where regular life overlaps with creative culture.  Graphic design is the meeting place for art and business. It's the glue between passion and visibility. I find joy in helping my clients present their business, event, idea, etc. in a way that feels unique and personal. Check out some of my work here. Contact me today to get started on your project.

In the movement realm, I'm a freelance dancer, choreographer, and dance writer. I've presented dance work through the Regional Arts and Culture Council's Night Lights, Downright Productions' Amorphous, Polaris Dance Theater's Galaxy Festival, FLOOR Center for Dance and Performance Works Northwest. â€‹ My writing on dance is published in Philadelphia's The Dance Journal and Oregon Arts Watch. I've continued my own movement practice as a member of  Tongue Dance Project. We are a rad group of women following the leadership of Stephanie Gilliland: committed to innovation and experimentation within contemporary dance.

How did I get here? Born and raised in the Philly burbs, I moved on to complete my bachelor of fine arts degree in Dance at George Mason in Virginia before heading out west to explore a new part of the country and Be An Artist post-grad. â€‹Turns out, Being An Artist is much more learning to be an adult and making art on the side than expected. Nonetheless, movement is a medicine to me and it keeps me connected to what I guess I’d call some sort of spirituality. Somewhere along the line of balancing Being An Adult and Being An Artist, I found a love for design, and have since pursued that as my main line of work.

Outside all of that, I love to spend time nature, camping and laying in hammocks. I love music with lyrics that make me want to read more poetry, and poetry by Ada Limón. I love my cat and my community and being covered in dirt barreling down a dirt hill on my gravel bike.
